Who we are
The Southwark Food Action Alliance (SFAA) is an independent collective of local food providers and distributors, charities and community partners, residents, businesses, and public sector representatives, coming together to deliver a joined-up holistic food systems approach that increases food security and food equality in Southwark.
The alliance was formed as a direct response to an increase in demand for services tackling food insecurity, a need for a strategic approach and oversight, and an understanding that improved food security is linked to building more resilient communities with improved health outcomes.
Aims
Southwark Food Action Alliance’s aim is to build a more affordable, healthy and sustainable food system for everyone in Southwark.
History
In 2017 a group of concerned Southwark food organisations come together, aware that more of us are needing foodbanks and struggling to afford food. The Southwark Food Action Alliance (SFAA) is formed: its aim is for us to work collaboratively. By the end of the year, there are more than 20 member organisations, from many different sectors, including foodbanks, food growing groups, the NHS, the Council, Community Southwark and Citizens Advice Southwark.
SFAA votes for Southwark to become a Sustainable Food place. The Food Security Action Plan is launched. Southwark Council declares a climate emergency.
The COVID-19 pandemic arrives in the UK. Faith groups, mutual aid groups, the voluntary sector and the public sector work together to support people through food.

The Southwark Sustainable Food Strategy is launched. Work begins on delivering the first action plan.

Governance
Southwark Food Action Alliance is hosted by Pecan. Currently we have a Steering Group which meets monthly.

Southwark Food Action Alliance currently has a Steering group with representatives from Pecan, Pembroke House, Spring Community Hub, 1st Place/Alexandra Rose, Notting Hill Genesis, Southwark Council and individual members.
